This Study Guide is included to
help you as you read the book. These questions will be used as
the basis of discussion the first few days of school.
Students will be
tested on each book during the first week of school. One
test will be given on Friday, August 10th during
English class and the second test will be given on Tuesday,
August 14th
during English class.
All questions should be written and
answered on paper (not college ruled) in complete sentences.
Questions will be turned-in on August 9th - the first full day of class.
Before you begin reading, identify five
places in the novel where you will stop to write a response to
your reading. (You might divide the book into five
approximately equal parts and choose those as your stopping
places.) I would recommend putting a sticky note at each spot to
remind yourself to stop and write your response. Obviously, one
of the stopping places should be the end of the novel! Identify
at the top of each response the page number or chapter number of
the stopping places.
Each of the five responses, which should be approximately one
handwritten page, should include the following:
A brief summary of the plot so far.
Your feelings about the progress of the novel. What do you
like or dislike and why?
You MUST mention setting, characterization, plot, theme,
conflict, symbolism, foreshadowing, and point of view at some point in
your responses. DO NOT merely write, "The novel had a
symbol," but give specific examples of these from the
novel. You do not need to mention all of these in each
response, but mention all of them at some point in your
responses.
Write neatly and legibly in pen and on the front of each
page. DO NOT TYPE! Focus less on plot and more on your
personal feelings about the novel and literary tools used by
the author.
