In the Sandifer Elementary Library, students in the 2nd - 5th grades participate in
the Accelerated Reader Program. They read special
A.R. books, take
computerized tests, earn points and win prizes!

|
Students are
encouraged to begin at their individual "comfort levels" and to
challenge themselves to progress to more difficult reading levels.
Participation is encouraged in a variety of ways. Each year special
readers are honored by having their pictures added to the
Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame. If students accumulate 100 points
during the school year their photos join others from past years.
Each time a student passes a test, he/she puts a ticket in the
"fishbowl". Once a month a name is drawn and the winner selects a
free book. As different goals are met, prizes are awarded. Each
month, a list of the "Top Ten Point Earners" is posted.
A.R. test reports are taken home periodically. The TOPS report which
is printed following each test lists the title, the book's reading
level, the number of correct answers and the points earned on an
individual test, as well as for the school year. This report
provides "Three Opportunities to Praise a Student" with recognition
from (1) the librarian, (2) the classroom teacher and (3) the
parent. The total number of points is always circled; this number
indicates the points acquired so far during the current school year.
In addition, several times during the year, students receive A.R.
Progress Reports which list the test titles, points, etc. from the
current school year. Points are removed (or "used") at the end of
each school year in order for all students to begin the new school
year with 0 points.
Students can now take two different types of Accelerated Reader
tests:
1. Reading Practice Quizzes (on library books) which award points on
passed tests.
2. Other Reading Quizzes (on selected stories from the classroom
reading textbooks) which do not award points but are used by the
classroom teacher to check reading comprehension.
*Another type of A.R test (Literacy Skills) is not being used by
our school.

Accelerated Reader Monthly Drawing
Winners
Every time students pass a test,
they are given a ticket to put in a fishbowl. Each month a name
is drawn and the winner selects a free book. After each drawing
the fishbowl is emptied and begins to fill up again for the next
drawing.
