All
students entering grades 6 through 8 are required to read the
books listed
below during the summer:
6th
Grade Reading: 1 book
7th, 7th
Honors, 8th, and 8th
Honors English: 2 books
Students will be tested on
each book during the first week of school. One test will be
given on Friday, August 9th during English class and the
second test will be given on Tuesday, August 13th
during English class. All work - questions and summaries
- should be written (not typed) and ready to be handed-in to their
English/Reading teacher on Thursday, August 8th which is
the first full day of school (Please note that the books are
not necessarily listed in the order of testing or importance of the
work.)
Following the tests, each teacher will choose one of the assigned
books for further in-class discussion. This book will be
covered in-depth with further work and assignments being completed
for additional grades.
In selecting
books for reading, Pillow Academy teachers and
the administration consider the contribution
each work may make to the education of the
reader. Furthermore, teachers make every effort
to carefully select appropriate works. Pillow
Academy believes selected materials that address
mature themes and issues can help students to
think critically about and understand our world,
its cultures, and the human experience. For
this reason, students are required to read,
consider, and discuss literary texts which may
include content or language that some may judge
questionable or unsuitable. Pillow Academy
recognizes that a particular work may be
objectionable to a student or parent but further
believes that exposure to these literary works
far outweigh the benefit of censorship. Any
views or opinions presented in the assigned
summer reading books are solely those of the
author and do not necessarily represent those of
Pillow Academy or its staff.
