Fundraiser Unit: This project is to build writing, organization and problem solving skills, as well as empathy. The process of researching and organizing will make you a better writer and problem solver. We will not carry out the fundraiser in class.

You may work INDEPENDENTLY or with TWO other people on this project. One, two or three people, and no more.

Step 1- Get out a blank sheet of paper; title it "Community Needs".

Step 2- Brainstorm Community needs. Find a need in our community (Greenwood) that you are passionate about. If you cannot think of one, research community needs or volunteer ideas/volunteer opportunities on the internet. I have listed a few ideas I thought of below:

Animal welfare
Homeless- food, clothing, shelter
Elderly- meals on wheels, yard clean up, field trips
Book drive for schools in need
Children hospital needs- toys, books, play at hospital, field trip at hospital
After school tutoring
Bullying awareness
Youth Christian outreach
Community garden
Community health- healthy food preparation classes, exercise workshops, community sports
Veterans
Litter
Community parks

Step 3- Write your Brainstorming ideas on your paper. List as MANY as you can think of. (yes, you can steal mine as wee.) Also, be as detailed/specific as you can. For example, notice how I defined specific hospital needs for children above. Go as far and be as specific as you can!

Step 4- CHOOSE 2-3 of your favorite community needs; CIRCLE them.

Step 5- Get out a second sheet of blank paper; title it "FUNDRAISER IDEAS".

Step 6- Brainstorm Fundraiser ideas. If you cannot think of any, research Fundraiser ideas. I have listed a few ideas below:
Car wash
Food drive (if your community need is for food)
Book drive (if your community need is for books/tutoring)
New or used garden tool drive (if your community need is a garden)
Auction fundraiser
Bake sale
Fall festival
Yard/Garage sale
Pageant (humans or animals)
Football/baseball/dodge ball game
Play/talent show/concert fundraiser
Gala
Ice cream social
Recipe books

Step 7- Write your Fundraiser ideas on your paper. List as MANY as you can think of. Again, be as detailed/specific as you can.

Step 8- Place papers somewhere safe and be ready to get to work Wednesday.

News Article- in class assignment in Google Classroom

News Article- in class assignment

Nonfiction text: News Article
News articles cover the basics of current events. They answer the questions: who, what, when, where, how, and why. A news article can include accounts of eyewitnesses to the happening event. It can contain photographs, accounts, statistics, graphs, recollections, interviews, polls, debates on the topic, etc. Headlines can be used to focus the reader's attention on a particular (or main) part of the article.

The most common way to structure a newspaper article is in the following outline:
I. Lead/Hook sentence
Grabs and hooks the reader immediately
II. Introduction
Tells readers where and when this story is happening
III. Opening quotation
Gives the reader a sense of the people involved and what they are thinking
IV. Main body
The heart or main point of the story
V. Closing quotes
Sums the article up in a few words
VI. Conclusion statement
A memorable way to end the story, words of wisdom learned from the story

ASSIGNMENT -PART ONE: Find and read a news article from a trustworthy news outlet (print/paper or online) and answer the following:
What is the Title of the news article?
Who is the Author?
What is the Lead sentence?
What is the Introduction?

What is the Opening quotation?
What is the Main body?
What is/are the Closing quote(s)?
What is the Conclusion statement?
**Remember, not ALL of these elements may be represented in the story, or in this exact order.

ASSIGNMENT-PART TWO: Now, using the outline below, write your own news article about a current event.

I. Lead/Hook sentence
Grabs and hooks the reader immediately
II. Introduction
Tells readers where and when this story is happening
III. Opening quotation
Gives the reader a sense of the people involved and what they are thinking
IV. Main body
The heart or main point of the story
V. Closing quotes
Sums the article up in a few words
VI. Conclusion statement
A memorable way to end the story, words of wisdom learned from the story
