PA Summer Reading 2023

Summer Reading

The Pillow Academy English department has planned a great summer reading experience for 5th - 12th grade students. It is our hope that our students enjoy not only these carefully curated book selections, but also a fun, healthy summer break with family and friends.

Summer Reading Information for Students entering Grades 9 - 12 + 8th Honors English

Students are required to read ONE book this summer. The classes below do not have study questions. As you read, take notes in the margins of your book to help you remember key passages. Pay attention to the author’s style and purpose. Watch for the author’s methods of characterization and use of symbols to suggest certain themes throughout the book. Note the author’s use of conflict and setting. Finally, consider how the main character’s conflict or dilemma may be a commentary on a larger issue by the author. Also take notes on foreshadowing, the theme, the plot and the point of view. A test will be given on the book during the first week of school in August (possibly the first full day of school). Other assignments will follow the test, possibly including an in-class essay along with other assignments.

Students must have a copy of the novel in class on the first day.
