Citing Quotes
Evidence-Based Terms (EBT)
Each quote must have an EVIDENCE-BASED TERM (EBT) introducing it
Examples of EBT:
According to the text, The narrator reflects, Knowles asserts,
As stated by Gene, Gene proclaims, In chapter one, it states,
Evidence (quotes) are cited using quotations marks around the quotes
Gene reflects to himself, “I was in the same room as him already” (Knowles 72).
Evidence which is already in quotation marks (it is SAID in the novel/not a thought), becomes a double quotation in the essay
When trying on Finny’s pink shirt, Gene proclaims, “‘I was Phineas, Phineas to the life’” (Knowles 74).
Quotes are copied word for word from novel; if any words are omitted, use ellipsis (…)
Parenthetical Citation (PC)
In MLA style, you acknowledge your sources by including parenthetical citations within your text. These refer the reader to the Works Cited (which you will complete at a later date).
Example:
The close of the millennium was marked by a deep suspicion of the natural world and an increasing reliance “upon the pronouncements of soothsayers and visionaries, who caused hysteria with their doom-laden forecasts of the end of humanity” (Mulligan 234).
The citation “(Mulligan 234)” informs the reader that the quotation originates on page 234 of a document by an author named Mulligan.
If you continue your sentence after the evidence/quote, simply continue without commas:
Gene proclaims, “‘You don’t have to yell at me, there’s nothing wrong” (74) reflecting his newly found way to escape his guilt.
Block Quotes
You must use block quotes if there are more than 4 quoted lines (not sentences) of text AFTER it is typed, Times New Romans, 12 point font.
**See me A.S.A.P. if you have a Block Quote; rules differ significantly for this type of quote
REMINDERS:
No Personal Pronouns
No Contractions
Essay written in Present tense (NO PAST TENSE)
MUST have correct page numbers for EVERY single piece of evidence
No two quotes may come from the same page (MUST have 6 different page #s in essay)
Page numbers MUST match our novel, the exact one given to you in class
Underline or Italicize title of novel
attach or upload your REVISED, SECOND draft
