IN-CLASS PROJECT:

https://kidworldcitizen.org/endangered-species-primates-lesson-plan-kids/ to introduce 3 endangered primate species
2.Divide students into three groups, and assign them each to one of the endangered primates: Silky Sifaka Lemur, Roloway Monkey, or Cotton-Top Tamarin.. Each group receives the information text to read about their primate and a copy of the “Endangered Primate Info Grid” (visual organizer) to fill out together about their primate
3.Using the information from their reading, plus the following short videos for research, students will create a 5 minute presentation to the class highlighting their endangered species. When they present to the class, the students in the audience will fill in their Info Grid with the missing information.

Christmas Science Activity-- The Case of the Missing Santa Claus
1. Show slides 1-15 to review.
2. Clue 3-DNA: Show slides 16-18 and have students complete page 5 in their Crime Buster Manual.
3. Clue 4-Fingerprints: Watch video, "Fingerprints for Kids"(http://bit.ly/2UzwKmt). Give each student the "Fingerprint" printable. Have students touch their faces with their fingertips and place each finger in the appropriate spot. Sprinkle cinnamon over the prints and shake so that cinnamon coats each print entirely-shake off excess cinnamon on a plate- fingerprints should appear on paper. Have students observe ridges and patterns. Show slides 19-21 and have students complete page 6 in their Crime Buster Manual.
4. Clue 5- white powder: Show slides 22-24 and have students complete page 7 in their Crime Buster Manual. As a class, complete science experiment at the bottom of page 7 to test unknown white substance by watching reaction when water, alcohol, or vinegar is added.
5. Solve case: Show slides 25-26 and have students complete page 8 in their Crime Buster Manual. Show slide 27 and have the class raise their hands for the suspect. Use slides 28-30 to reveal the "criminal".

Christmas Science Activity-- The Case of the Missing Santa Claus
1. Crime Scene: Read "The Case of the Missing Santa: Class letter" to the students. Show slides 1-8 of the power point presentation. Pass out manuals to each student. Have students complete page 1(draw the crime scene) page in their manual discussing their observations as a class.
2. Introduce Suspects: Show slides 9-10 to introduce the suspects and have students complete page 2 in their manual. In order to be good detectives, students need to see good CSI work modeled- show video.
3. Clue 1- Footprints: Show slides 11-12 and have students complete page 3 in their manual. For an extension: Have students trace their shoe print and measure in inches. Compare how similar their "footprints" are.
4. Clue 2-Handwriting: Before next crime scene work, have students practice comparing handwriting samples. Students will be given a handwriting sample to find its match with other samples that have been set up station style around room. Discuss each child's conclusion at the end of activity. Show slides 13-15 and have students complete page 4 in their manual.

1.Take up social studies books and issue science books to use next semester. Discuss science topics that will be covered. Briefly introduce the steps of scientific method: purpose/question, research, hypothesis, experiment, analysis, and conclusion. Tell students we will use scientific method to complete STEM activity!
2. STEM challenge: Using materials provided, attempt to build the tallest, STRONGEST tower with a platform at the top that will be able to support 3 peppermint candies stacked on top of each other without falling over. Winning tower is the tallest and able to support peppermints. Towers must be free standing!
Materials: 3 peppermint candies, 5 popsicle sticks, 5 marshmallows, 12 toothpicks, 2 index cards, 20 mini marshmallows, 1 foot of tape, 20 pieces of spaghetti, 8 gumdrop candies
