How could we help the characters in Romeow and Drooliet resolve the conflict?
3.Ask students to recall Romeow and Drooliet.
What was the conflict in the story? (The Filinis and Barkers didn’t like each other) 
4.Why didn’t they like each other? (We don’t really know – dogs and cats don’t get along) 5.Present the following question to students. Allow them to work with a group to come up with
3 possible answers. 
6.How could we help the characters to resolve this conflict?
Discuss student responses and how this suggestion would help the characters resolve
the conflict. List on chart paper 
Point out to students that story characters aren’t the only ones who have to resolve conflicts.
Ask students to think about their reaction when someone makes them angry. Write responses

Remind students why it's important to recycle. 

Students trace the route of the Garbage Barge, beginning and ending in New York.
  A map of the United States and Mexico. 
 Teacher Premade Chart: “Here Comes the Garbage Barge.” 
 New York 
 1. Morehead City, North Carolina 
 2. New Orleans, Louisiana 
 3. Mexico 
 4. Belize 
 5. Texas 
 6. Florida 
Use: Pencils, markers, crayons  

  Show students the chart and discuss. Tell students they will be tracing the route of the
Garbage Barge by locating these places on a map.
Give students the map and have them find the state of New York. Draw a star on NY.
Have students locate each place on the chart, draw a circle and write the corresponding
number in the circle.
Have students draw dashes connecting the numbers to show the route. Students should end
where they began. Since the garbage eventually ended up in Brooklyn, you might want to show
them on a larger map where Brooklyn is and discuss.

Introduce new vocab words for the story Grandma’s Record. conga- A tall, narrow drum played by striking with the hands.
percussion - A kind of musical instrument, such as a drum, that is played by striking or shaking.
perform- to present, usually in front of an audience.
record- A disk on which music is stored for listening. 
salsa- A type of dance music that comes from Latin America. 
theater- A building where concerts, plays, and movies are presented. 

Have students make flash cards for the vocab words.

Cliff Hanger Skill: Cause and Effect
1. Explain Cause and Effect (Watch video on cause and effect)
    Read story on p. 15A-15B in teacher book.
    Ask questions on page 15B.
2. Introduce Vocabulary Words on Smartboard
3. Have students write words in notebook
    Optional: Have students make study notecards of vocab words
4. Listen to Read Aloud/Have students read story as a class.
5. Go over parts of story: 3 Main characters, setting, problem, solution will be on test.


HOMEWORK:


Reread story.
Finish Vocabulary notecards if not finished in class.
Study any worksheets on story from class.
Test on Cliff Hanger Thursday.
