RESOURCES / Here are resources to help you find information on Reflexive Verbs in Spanish. Go over the information from the attached links and handouts. This lesson covers information from different pages from the Textbook: Ch. 7 pp. 232, 233, 234 (Side of the page), 249, 250, 252, & 253 (Bottom of the page). Watch the videos posted on Google Classroom. READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: A verb is reflexive when the subject and the object are the same. Another way to think of it is when the subject is doing something to itself, it is reflexive. To "study reflexive and non-reflexive verbs in sentences" means to analyze sentences to identify verbs that describe actions performed by the subject on themselves (reflexive) versus actions directed towards someone or something else (non-reflexive), often using reflexive pronouns like "myself," "yourself," or "themselves" in the reflexive verbs; essentially, understanding when a verb indicates an action done to oneself versus an action done to another object or person.

In Spanish, regular verbs in the past tense follow predictable patterns by removing the infinitive ending (ar, er, OR ir) and adding the correct past tense ending.
These verbs have changes in their stem to maintain the pronunciation or follow specific rules in certain tenses or forms. For example, some verbs that end in in the infinitive change to in the preterite (Past Tense) tense.
Spelling-change verbs in the Past Tense:
Changes occur in the "yo" form to preserve pronunciation.
-car verbs: c changes to qu (e.g., buscar → busqué).
-gar verbs: g changes to gu (e.g., pagar → pagué).
-zar verbs: z changes to c (e.g., almorzar → almorcé).

MONDAY, Nov. 3 / Today, we're diving into the Spanish Present Progressive, or El Presente Progresivo—the "ing" tense. Let's talk about what's happening right now. Think of it as how you say "I am talking" or "She is running" in Spanish. Here’s our plan for the day: Open your textbook to Chapter 12, pages 409-413. We’ll focus on the formation rules found on pages 409 and 412. We'll break down the grammar. I'll show you how -ar verbs turn into -ando and -er/-ir verbs become -iendo. We'll practice together, looking at regular verbs and those tricky irregular and stem-changing ones. We'll review your class notes and handouts, so be ready to ask questions! To keep the learning going, you have some videos to watch at home. Be sure to take notes—they'll be super helpful! HOMEWORK: Read through the "Lesson For Present Progressive" handout. Use your highlighter to mark the key information. Complete the exercises from the handout "INTENTALO". REMINDERS: In preparation for your next test go over the rules and verb conjugations for the present progressive tense. READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
The Spanish present progressive is formed by combining the verb estar with the present participle (gerund), which typically ends in -ando or -iendo. This tense is used to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking. It is similar to the English "be + -ing" construction.
Structure
You must first conjugate "estar" to match the subject.
yo estoy (I am), tú estás (you are Informal Singular), él/ella/Usted está (he is /she is /you are Formal - Singular), nosotros/as estamos (we are), vosotros/as estáis (you all are Informal Plural- Spain), and ellos/ellas/Ustedes están (they are /you are Formal-Informal Plural).
For regular 'ar' verbs, drop the '-ar' ending and add '-ando'; for 'er' and 'ir' verbs, drop the '-er' or '-ir' ending and add '-iendo' to form the Present Participle.
FORMATION:
Drop the "-ar" and add "-ando".
Hablar (to speak) hablando (speaking)
Estudiar (to study) estudiando (studying)
Drop the "-er" and add "-iendo".
Beber (to drink) bebiendo (drinking)
Comer (to eat) comiendo (eating)
Drop the "-ir" and add "-iendo".
Vivir (to live) viviendo (living)
Examples
Yo estoy hablando (I am speaking) Infinitive Verb = Hablar Present Participle = Hablando
Tú estás comiendo (You are eating) Infinitive Verb = Comer Present Participle = Comiendo
Ud. está viviendo (He/She is living) Infinitive Verb = Vivir Present Participle = Viviendo
Some verbs have irregular stem changes in the present participle.
Stem-Changing Verbs ending in -ir.
Ir stem-changing verbs:
Changes: e-i
0-u
Examples:
Decir (to say) diciendo (saying)
Venir (to come) viniendo (coming)
Dormir (to sleep) durmiendo (sleeping)
Irregular verbs
Some verbs have irregular present participles, such as those with stem changes:
* -yendo. ⇒ If the stem of an -er or -ir verb ends in a vowel, -iendo becomes -yendo.
For -er/-ir verbs where the stem ends in a vowel (like leer / to read, traer / to bring, or oír / to hear), change the "-iendo" to "-yendo" to avoid awkward spellings.
Leer (to read) leyendo (reading)
Traer (to bring) trayendo (bringing)
Oir (to hear) oyendo (hearing)
The verb "ir" is considered irregular in Spanish, not just in its simple conjugations but also in its gerund form, which is yendo, not i-endo. This irregularity is because the verb lacks a clear stem, so the "-ie-" of the typical gerund ending for "-ir" verbs changes to a "-y-". Therefore, "ir" is irregular in the present progressive tense.
Ir (to go) yendo (going)
Uses of the Present Progressive:
Use it with the verb estar to show something is happening right now.
Estoy limpiando mi cuarto (I'm cleaning my room).
Él está tomando agua (He is drinking water).
It provides immediacy and context that an action is currently happening.
Yo estoy estudiando español (I am studying Spanish).
It can describe the manner in which something was done.
Salió corriendo (He left running).

Lesson for Indirect Object Pronouns: An indirect object pronoun tells to whom or for whom an action is done. In English, these pronouns are me, you, him, her, it, us, and them. To identify an indirect object pronoun, first find the verb and the direct object (what is acted upon), then ask "to whom?" or "for whom?" the action is performed. The answer is the indirect object. I.O.P: me (to/for me) te (to/for you) le (to for him/her, you) nos (to/for us) os (to/for you) (plural) les (to/for them, you) (plural). How to Find an Indirect Object Pronoun: Identify the verb: in the sentence. Identify the direct object: by asking "what?" or "who?" receives the action of the verb. Identify the indirect object: by asking "to whom?" or "for whom?" the action is done. Example "He bought me a present". Verb: bought Direct object: a present (bought what? a present). Indirect object: me (bought a present for whom? for me). Therefore, "me" is the indirect object pronoun. "The teacher gave the students the test". Verb: gave Direct object: the test (gave what? the test). Indirect object: the students (gave the test to whom? to the students).
